Colours that matter and colours that do not
Neutral earth tones keep you cool and unobtrusive. Bright white glares in photographs and shows dust within an hour. Black and dark blue attract tsetse flies, which are a genuine nuisance in parts of Tsavo and the Mara triangle. Camouflage clothing is illegal for civilians in Kenya — leave it at home.
The layering problem
A 6am game drive in an open-sided 4x4 at 1,600 metres is properly cold. By 10am you will be in a t-shirt. Bring a fleece or light down jacket, a long-sleeved shirt over a t-shirt, and shed layers as the morning warms.

Full safari suits, heavy hiking boots, more than one smart outfit, and hair dryers. Most camps do same-day laundry, so pack three or four days of clothing however long you are staying.
